 James Cameron's Avatar
Movie scoring: 8.5/10
I'll tell you why I tack it the 1.5 on the rating later.
If you're one of those who reads the reviews of movies before going to see them, then you will probably never go see this one. Seriously, movie critics may be the only other humans who qualify as being equal in arrogance and stupidity to prostiticians.
The movie's scenery is beyond belief, phenomenal, fantastic, almost to the point of overpowering in its detail. It is probably suggested to see it twice to get the full monty, because it really can be overpowering, so you might get so busy with created beauty of the scenery and miss out on the story.
The storyline/plot of the movie, (unless you are a movie critic), opens virtually any/every commentary line of modern human civilisation; religion spirituality v. science, human conscience v. corporate greed/brutal militarism, ethnocentricity v. ethnocentricity, forbidden love, and there are probably a number of others ...
It's a great story from start to the last :30 seconds of the film; the real 3D is immersive to the point of almost being addictive. The ecology of the CG world is even played into the story massively well, and if you happen to see the film, pay special attention to Grace's commentary regarding comparing the ecology to the human brain; another line in the story for those paying attention.
Apparently, there are a number of secularists who take issue with the pantheistic tones throughout the movie ~ summarily, so the fuck what. It's a MOVIE ~ entertainment ~ escape from reality ...
It is just beautifully done, hands down. But, in typical fashion, Cameron does the standard moronic Hollywood, ("we might make a sequel") ending, that leaves the viewer going "WTF noob, that's the best you could do?"
Other than the ending, "I" have zero complaints, and it will go into the top three of all time in my book; nothing beats a movie that runs the catalog of human social commentaries/aberrations. Critics; you can have the sweat off my balls.

I'll be interested to hear what you think about it, Tab.
Can you get the Real3D version, or just standard format?

 Re: James Cameron's Avatar
I saw this movie earlier this week in 3D.
Some have complained about the stereotyping of the corporate villains, but movies have always found its villains in the current situation it found itself in. During WW2, you got Nazi's villains, during the cold war you got the evil Russian spy, bond movies were great in finding the villains of the week, Today its corporate villains and they well deserve it.
Some have called it simplistic! Hello, its HOLLYWOOD.
So on to the movie. Great film no. memorable film, yes. seeing it twice is the way to go because so much is on the film. The dialogue could have been written by a 12 year old but that is not why you are watching it anyway. It is amazing to watch and be entranced by this world.

Not one, not two, but three glorious dimensions. However I do sometimes get nostalgic for the days when it was just one man with a piano and another guy who was really fast with a box of crayons and a flipchart.

 Re: James Cameron's Avatar
Okay, just got back - it's about half-past one in the morning and Artun's out like a light.
Wow. Very intense film. Indeed the shape of things to come. Great 3D, primarily because the played it down and didn't take every opportunity to poke a spear throught the screen. Well done hollywood.
A sort of fleshy version of the matrix I thought. Gaia, networked life and large robotic suits to match the more seamless avatars. Very much enviromentalists Vs. industry. Very very beautiful scenary - fauna and flora - for that alone it should win a whole slew of design and artistic awards.
A few holes that I won't mention, but, loved it, it was so good it made me feel sad that I won't live forever, a communal dream par-excellance.
